Night of the Radishes

December 23 is Night of the Radishes in Oaxaca. A huge annual competition where locals carve scenes from giant radishes and display them in the main square. It is festive, creative and rather other-worldly. The zocalo has filled with red-tinged creatures, wondrous and divine, on this lively night for over 200 years.

I found this old piece [click] that I wrote in pre-prison Oaxaca after an impressive night with the veggies.

There are things about Mexico I miss. This is one.

PS — Here’s a novel by Sandra Benitez, Night of the Radishes [click]
