A gift of blackbirds

Dinner guests brought this sweet centerpiece in honor of “Blackbirds in the Pomegranate Tree: Stories from Ixcotel State Prison.”

Not always do prison and pomegranates line up. Not always do hardship and friendship align.

Over chiles en nogada, we celebrated human warmth (and Mexican food) in all its marvelous shapes and colors.

It chilled to single digits outside, but inside we were warm warm warm!

Monday blog bonus! Our recipe for Agua Fresca de Pepino [cucumber] evolved over the course of the day and ended up like this:

(for two)

1/2 cup chopped cucumber, peeled and seeded
1 cup limeade
juice of one fresh lime
6 mint leaves
a shot of tequila!

What were we saying about warmth??? 🙂
